Stormy Sunday In El Paso and Las Cruces

EL PASO, Texas —

Update: The flood advisory has been lifted, but moderate rain is expected to last through most of the night. This means El Paso and Las Cruces are are still prone to flooding because the ground is saturated and rainfall will be consistent. Areas most prone to flooding with this storm include, Horizon, Socorro, Fabens, Tornillo and San Elizario.

What started off as a pleasant Sunday ended on a soggy note. Showers and thunderstorms brushed across the Borderland starting at around 5:30 p.m.

Anthony and Las Cruces got the first few drops of rain. Light to moderate rain fell in Las Cruces in areas such as Picacho Hills and Mayfield High School.

In El Paso, heavy to moderate rain pounded east, northeast, downtown and central El Paso. Cars splashed through the rain-soaked freeway along Interstate 10 at Brown and other streets.

Rain also made slick streets near U.S. 54 and Pershing in northeast El Paso.

The rain is a result of moist, unstable air and a disturbance moving across the area. The storms are capable of producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds of 45 miles per hour and more, along with hail.

A chance for rain will remain in the forecast all week, but rain chances will go down Wednesday, before spiking again on Friday.

Highs will be in the lower 90s then, cool to the 80s by Friday.
