EL PASO, Texas —

With winter weather, it is important for drivers to take extra precautions to be safe.

Icy or wet roads, snow and high winds may pose a threat to driving conditions. The Texas Department of Transportation urges motorists to follow these guidelines to stay safe.

  • Maintain your vehicle in accordance with manufacture’s recommendations
  • Ensure headlights and tail lights are functioning properly
  • Accelerate slowly, drive slowly, and observe traffic signs and alerts
  • Approach bridges, shaded spots, and turn slowly

Auto Safety Check

Ensure that your vehicle is maintained. Check to make sure that wiper blades, heater, defroster, ignition, battery, headlights, tail lights, brakes and tires are properly functioning. Be sure that your vehicle has proper levels of anti-freeze and fuel.

Prepare a Road Emergency Kit

  • Booster cables

  • Abrasive materials (sand or cat litter)
  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Extra pair of socks and gloves
  • Blankets
  • Batteries
  • Snacks and water
  • Ice scraper
  • Flares and matches

You can check road conditions anytime by calling the TxDOT 24 hour hotline at 1-800-452-9292
