Statewide Assessment To Get More Difficult

EL PASO, Texas —

Some parents say it’s the most wonderful time of the year: back to school time!

However, your student may be more stressed when it comes to statewide assessment exams.

Matthew and Katie Davalos are enjoying their last couple of days of summer vacation.

“I’m going to be a sophomore,” Matthew said.

Friday, they spent their time indoors thanks to the rain.

“I like Mortal Kombat,” Matthew added.

While these two aren’t concentrating on studying just yet, later this year Matthew will face a much bigger challenge than beating video games.

His sister Katie can tell him.

“Because if we don’t pass the TAKS, we won’t be able to graduate, and we’ll have to retake them,” Katie said.

She was talking about the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skill and better known as TAKS.

“They’re stressful,” Katie said.

For Matthew, they exam will change its name to STARR and state education officials say it will be more rigorous.

That’s something many school districts are preparing for like those faculty at Socorro Independent School District.

"We already weren't concerned about them passing an exam. We want them to be commended. It's all about rigor because we are worried about them being able to apply and go to the college of their choice," SISD High School's Principal,Angelica Ramsey, said.

Those higher expectations don’t scare matt. He says he’s ready to fight for the highest score.

Those schools that got an “academically unacceptable score” are Vista Del Futuro Charter School , Cotton Valley Early College High School High School, and Ranchland Hill Middle School.
