State senator wins reelection by 2-1 margin

By Jesse Martinez

EL PASO, Texas —

Unlike some candidates on election night, State Sen. Jose Rodriguez, D-El Paso, had no trouble getting reelected.

Based on the unofficial vote count, Rodriguez wins reelection by a 2-1 margin over Republican Dan Chavez.

Chavez, who served as county attorney for 17 years, has held the state Senate seat since 2010.

Chavez has run for office seven times and lost every time. Rodriguez said voters could see the difference in experience.

"I'm prepared to and committed to putting in the hard work; whatever it takes to have El Paso's voice heard in Austin and to be a representative of all the people regardless of party," Rodriguez said. "We're all working for El Paso.

Rodriguez said he plans to continue focusing on public education. He said that without proper resources for education, there will be no chance for El Paso to attract good high-paying jobs to the area.
