Sparks Colonia Residents Have No Heat

EL PASO COUNTY, Texas —

Some residents of the Sparks community don't have the means to heat their homes. And some use dangerousheat sources.

"We have several blankets but not enough heat to feel comfortable," said Esther Navas. She and her family do what they can to keep warm. She said there's enough blankets for four adults and two children. But for the last several days they've used this gas stove to heat the mobile home.

"As soon as we turn it off it gets cold again," said Navas.

Navas' home is not well insulated. There are holes in the ceiling and cracks in the walls and one of the windows doesn't shut correctly. She said she's lucky that it's not raining because the ceiling leaks.

"The water seeps in when it rains. I place a pot near the table to catch the water," said Navas.

The Navas family is not the only one. She said some of her neighbors don't have heat either and the ones who do, like another resident who uses a wood burning stove, don't necessarily take precaution.

Navas has one bed where her two grandchildren sleep, which leaves her sleeping on the cold floor, where even the warmth from this stove doesn't keep her warm. She said she knows exactly what she wants this Christmas.

"If I could, I'd buy a portable heater," said Navas.
