El Pasoans will celebrate along with John “Danny” Olivas, an alumnus of the El Paso Independent School District, in fulfilling his childhood dream of launching into space on board STS-117 space shuttle Atlantis.
Mad Science® of El Paso is celebrating this momentous occasion with the launching of the Academy of Future Space Explorers. This is a new after-school science enrichment program, developed in cooperation with NASA, which consists of 8 stimulating weekly sessions of one-hour space-themed classes. The Academy of Future Space Explorers takes children on a voyage of discovery. With unique hands-on activities, amazing demonstrations and fun educational take-homes, this is an experience that is truly out of this world!
Assistant Principal of Polk Elementary School Micaela Varela says, “The Mad Science® programs are a unique and innovative way to teach science. Parents, teachers, and students have given Mad Science® rave reviews. We are so thankful for Price’s Give ‘Em Five Fund to make it possible to bring Mad Science® programs to Polk.” The Academy of Future Space Explorers at Polk Elementary School is on Wednesday and Thursday at 3:30 to 4:30 pm.
Dr. Ken Cheung aka “Professor Krypton Ken” says, “Research has indicated that exposure to Mad Science® significantly increased participants’ science content knowledge by 41% versus only 6% in a comparison group of students who did not participate in Mad Science®. Furthermore, 39% of students with a “Low” level of interest in science prior to exposure to Mad Science®, experienced an increase in their level of interest in science to either “Moderate” or “High” after experiencing Mad Science®. We are also offering the Academy of Future Space Explorers at El Paso Community College – Trans Mountain Campus this summer.”
