EL PASO, Texas —
One east El Paso man said that he went to vote Tuesday at his precinct at the Gary Del Palacio Recreation Center and found that someone had already voted for him.
For the most part, El Paso's Board of Elections said voting went smoothly on Election Day. No major problems were reported with the machines except for this incident caused by human error.
"That's me, I'm Guillermo Ocegueda.' Then I said, 'I did not vote.' I said, 'You're probably mistaking it for my son.' And she even told me, 'Your son, I mean you, voted early,' and I said, 'No, I didn't,'" said Ocegueda.
Ocegueda said he is certain this wasn't a case of voter fraud. Instead his vote was crossed off the list when his son, who has the same name, voted at the same precinct during early voting. Either way instead of two Ocegueda votes there was only one.
The only difference is that his son has a middle initial and of course, a different date of birth. It's an error that could have been presented claims Ocegueda if only their identifications had been checked.
"It bothers me that I lost my vote," said Ocegueda. "I'm only happy that all the things I wanted passed."
El Paso's Board of Elections Administrator Javier Chacon said that this incident is a human error that the office will work to correct.
Chacon said there was still a possibility for Ocegueda to vote. A provisional ballot should have been filled out.
"If he didn't vote, he could have voted provisional. Then we would have looked at the signatures and then the provisional ballot would have counted," said Chacon.
Aside from this particular incident Chacon reported long lines up until the polls closed. Some polls had some 100 people waiting in line at 7 p.m. However, they all managed to vote.
