January 30, 2007 —
Some parts of Socorro that are still rebuilding from the 2006 floods are starting to see flashbacks.
It doesn't take much rain to start the water flowing in this part of Socorro. On Tuesday morning it drizzled for a few hours and water started to accumulate.
"It's horrible. The water floods this and people can't get through," said Socorro resident, Tina Ramirez.
As KFOX told you in a Teamfox special assignment, the High Ridge subdivision flooded five times. Since then, the city of Socorro has started work in the area to prevent it.
One problem area is the retaining pond that broke and spilled enough water to flood the homes at the bottom. Now, the ponding area has been altered to hold more water.
"We just made some holes, what they call french drains so it will drain a lot of water faster than having some kind of lining," said Socorro Mayor Trini Lopez.
The second problem area is the arroyo near Stockyard Road. In August the arroyo was covered with sand and almost disappeared. Now, bulldozers have dug it up again, making it deeper and wider. But the water is being guided down a curb and over Stockyard Road.
Then the water flows down another arroyo and toward some homes. But that's not all, it goes down a drop-off down into another neighborhood.
"It comes from up there and it floods this whole neighborhood," said Jaime De La Riva, who lives in the Thunder Road. mobile home park.
A car was abandoned after it became stuck a few days ago. The mobile home neighborhood is getting the brunt of it, but Lopez said other entities have to step in to fix it. Some residents don't trust the city will do a good job.
"I would hope so because this is a big disaster down here," said Ramirez.
