Socorro moves ahead with annexation process after vote

By Geoff Tyler

SOCORRO, Texas —

Socorro is already moving ahead with the next step of their expansion plan. Just one day after the city's plan was approved, the city is already working on the engineering phase of the project which includes measuring and putting down pipes.

On Monday night, the city hastily called a meeting to approve their annexation plan, after canceling a meeting on the same issue last week. Monday night's meeting had few protestors from San Elizario since the meeting's announcement was made only on the web over the weekend.

When Socorro spokesperson David Garcia was asked why the media is blocked from talking to the council about its actions,Garcia pulled off his microphone and told us the interview was over.

A judge ruled Friday that council could proceed with annexation plans but not collect taxes on the property until it's determined whether council members should be holding office, after they extended their terms without a public vote. On April 25,that same judge will decide if Socorro council members hold their office when they shouldn't, because they extended their terms without a a public vote. If he rules again Socorro, then Monday night's annexation vote becomes null and void.
