Socorro to move November election

EL PASO, Texas —

The Socorro City Council has decided to move its May election to November 2012.

The resolution adopted earlier this month by the council changed the date for the city's next general election and extended the terms of office for all council members.

The new resolution gives Mayor Trini Lopez and city Reps. Guillermo "Willie" Madrid and Jesse Gandara six more months in office.

The terms of city Reps. Maria Reyes, Gloria Rodriguez and Mary Garcia will now expire in May 2014 instead of May 2013.

Lopez was elected mayor in November during a special election to replace former mayor Guillermo "Willie" Gandara, who was recalled in May. Madrid and Gandara were elected in May 2010.

Lopez, Madrid, and Gandara's terms were supposed to expire in May 2012.

David Garcia, a spokesman for the city of Socorro, said the extended terms will save taxpayers money.

"If we hold the May election, we will have to pay for it," Garcia said.
