Snow Increases Business Near Ruidoso

RUIDOSO, N.M. —

Ruidoso's Ski Apache and Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort was packed this weekend with people looking to escape.

People are having lots of fun in the snow while forgetting financial woes.

These sisters from Long Beach, Calif., played in the snow for the first time just outside the Inn of the Mountain Gods resort Sunday.

“I think it is fun because you finally get to build a snowman," said one sister.

Others took advantage of Ski Apache's trails, although one snowboarder said it was a little busy.

“On the beginner's hill there was a lot of people because everybody there is basically new. But on the big hills, there is a lot less people,” said Cody Michell of west El Paso

One family spending three days at the Inn of the Mountain Gods waited a long time to get their room, but they were rewarded for the wait.

“The manager gave us an upgrade because we waited an hour,” said Fernando Cantu of Monterrey, Mexico.

Cantu said he understands the nation’s problems and he had to also wait for this vacation because of the tough economic times.

“We didn't take a vacation this year and we waited for this vacation because it's expensive,” Cantu said.

His family is forgetting about their troubles for 16 days.

“It's a cycle. I think right now we are on a hill and another peak will come,” Cantu said.

Most of the people we spoke with said with the new year in just days be sure to call ahead if you want to make last-minute plans to visit the resort or ski hills because it is a little crowded.
