Slow voter turnout picks up Tuesday evening

By Joshua Zuber

EL PASO, Texas —

The turnout at the polling station on Edgemere Boulevard was pretty low Tuesday morning and afternoon, according to poll workers, despite high turnout during this year's early voting, which ended May 25.

Over on the Westside, poll workers told KFOX 14 that this afternoon's voter turnout for both the Republicanand Democrat parties is a little below average for a presidential primary.

But with school in session and many folks likely back to work after Memorial Day, poll workers said that turnout will probably pick up in the evening hours.

What seems to be driving people to the polls is El Paso's Democratic congressional race.

KFOX 14 had a chance to talk with a couple of people who voted at a Westside station, and one voter said he changed from Republican to Democrat just to vote for Beto O'Rouke.

"I want to get the incumbent (Sylvester Reyes) out," said James Fresquez, an Upper Valley resident.

A first-time voter said she came to the polls Tuesday because Reyes' positions inspired her political participation.

"My sorority sister's mom is really close to the Reyes campaign, and she brought me to the Clinton (rally), when Clinton came. So, it kind of got me excited to vote," Destiny Blancheet said.

To vote you must present your voter ID card, a valid government issued photo ID or utility bill.
