Shooting victim inside Aggie Memorial Stadium doesn't place blame on NMSU

Victim grateful injury wasn't more serious

By Samantha Manning

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Fifty-seven-year-old Patsy Bejarano said she came out for her first ever Aggie game Saturday night to watch them face off against the Lobos.

She said she was sitting in the bleachers near the press box when all of a sudden she felt something sharp hit her leg.

"Bam," Bejarano said. "It hurts. I go, 'Wow, that hurts.' I saw my pants I go, 'I've got a hole in my pants.' I told my daughter, 'Valerie, I got shot.'"

Police said the gunshot came from outside of the stadium.

Bejarano was taken to University Medical Center and was released early Sunday morning.

"It hurts to walk," Bejarano said.

Police found the bullet at the scene and said it came from a small-caliber handgun.

"It had bounced off theĀ pant leg," Bejarano said.

Bejarano said getting hit by a stray bullet was the last thing she expected while spending an otherwise pleasant evening with her daughter and daughter's boyfriend.

"It was my first game," Bejarano said. "First and only. I'm not going anymore."

New Mexico State University police said the shooting will lead to greater security in future games.

"We're going to take enhanced security measures as far as patrols, security measures taken at the gate," NMSU Deputy Police Chief Andy Bowen said.

Bejarano told KFOX14 she hopes police catch the shooter quickly and does not blame NMSU for what happened to her.

"I don't hold them responsible," Bejarano said. "It wasn't their fault."

Bejarano was the only person injured during the game and said she's grateful that no one else was hurt.

"It didn't really hit me until this morning," Bejarano said. "I sat down and broke down. I go, 'It could've been worse, but thank God it wasn't.'"

So far, police have no suspects in the case.
