Sheriff's Deputies Cracking Down On Trespassers

By Phil Anaya

EL PASO, Texas —

It says it clear on a bright red sign, "No trespassing." But the El Paso County Sheriffs Office said it's still not enough to keep people out of this large area behind the Socorro athletic complex.

"A lot of people just don't know. They think that the desert doesn't belong to anybody but certain areas are private property," said Deputy Jesse Tovar.

That's why the Homeowners Association of Americas Estates has hired off-duty sheriff's deputies to crack down on people trespassing and off-roading. It didn't take long after KFOX14 started rolling, to catch someone breaking the law.

"He was out here joy riding with his family, we just let them know he can't be out here and he respected our command and just went on his way," said Tovar.

Deputies said stopping the drivers isn't just about enforcing the law, but also keeping people safe.

"It was a couple of weeks ago there was an incident where 2 teens lost their lives from ATV driving in this area," said Tovar.

Deputies said the biggest reason the area is hard to enforce is because there is so much land.

"The more El Paso grows the further east these types of areas become frequent with people who want to do off-roading," said Tovar.
