EL PASO, Texas —
The second day of testimony for a woman accused of murdering her 2-year-old goddaughter while the child's parents were deployed began Tuesday.
As KFOX14 previously reported, Shawntrell Dawkins and her husband Nakia Dawkins were arrested and charged with the murder of Milayna Harris back in 2008.
Tuesday was another emotional day of testimony as Milyana's mother took the stand to testify against the woman she entrusted to keep her daughter safe.
Some jurors covered their mouths and looked away when viewing photos of Milyana's injuries.
Chief medical examiner Juan Contin said Milayna had innumerable injuries covering her entire body including bruising on her internal organs. He said the cause of death was one of the 10 head injuries, which caused internal bleeding in her brain.
At one point, the court went into recess after one juror began to sob uncontrollably.
The defense argues that Milayna was taking a special type of medication that caused her to bruise easily and also suggested that she may have fallen down the stairs and caused the injuries to herself.
The defense also alluded to Nakia as the one who caused Milyana's death.
Detective Mark Fernandez told the court he believes both are responsible.
"They both admitted to beating this child and she was severely beaten and she died," Fernandez said in court.
Jurors also heard testimony from a friend who said she noticed the welts on Milayna and unfortunately did not report it.
Nakia was found guilty of injury to a child, and he is currently jailed and awaiting sentencing.
