EL PASO, Texas —
After jurors deliberated all day over sentencing for Shawntrell Dawkins, a judge announced that Dawkins would be sentenced to 33 years in prison for the death of her goddaughter, Milayna Harris.
When her sentence was announced, Dawkins' mother showed relief and smiled at prosecutors.
Dawkins stood without any emotion.
However, the defense team said they were relieved and very happy with the outcome, because Dawkins could have faced life in prison if she had been charged with capital murder.
In closing arguments Wednesday, the defense had asked the jury for a responsible sentence. The defense wanted jurors to sentence Dawkins to life in prison with the possibility of parole, where she could be paroled one day in the future near her mother in Georgia.
Dawkins was facing 5 to 99 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
After a week of emotional testimony that included graphic details about the death of 2-year-old Milayna, her mother, Sheree Harris, breathed a sign of relief.
On Wednesday, Dawkins was found guilty of murder. Prosecutors had tried to charge her with capital murder, but the jury handed down a punishment that was the lesser of the two charges.
Milayna Harris' mother left her daughter in the care of Dawkins, while she was deployed in Germany. Shawntrell Dawkins' husband, Nakia Dawkins, was found guilty of injury to a child in 2009. He has not been sentenced, because a jury was deadlocked in his sentencing phase.
During his trial, he testified that Shawntrell was the one responsible for inflicting 10 injuries to the child's head. It was never determined what object was used to harm the child.
Shawtrell Dawkins has already spent five years in jail awaiting trial, which the judge confirmed will count toward her 33-year prison sentencing.
As for Nakia Dawkins, no sentencing date has been given.
