According to goarmyed.com, U.S. soldiers will no longer be able to request help to pay tuition.

The suspension to the program was announced Thursday and is effective Friday.

Maj. Joe Buccino, a spokesperson for Fort Bliss, said soldiers will still be able to get an education through their VA benefits.

"Soldiers can still pursue their educational goals through their VA benefits, which includes the Montgomery GI bill, the post 9/11 GI bill. Those things are still in place; soldiers can still take advantage of those," Buccino said.

According to the site, soldiers that are currently enrolled in classes that were already approved by the Army Tuition Assistance program will not be affected.

"If soldiers are currently enrolled in courses, they're approved for tuition assistance, then there's no change for them. They still have that tuition approved. No new tuition assistance will be approved after today," Buccino said.

The halt to tuition assistance applies to all soldiers, including the Army National Guard and Army Reserves.

The decision came in response to the sequestration.

"The bottom line is we hope that Congress is able to develop a budget that's approved by the president and we can reverse sequestration," Buccino said.
