Schools don't let down guard against West Nile virus

EL PASO, Texas —

With plenty of Friday night high school football games attracting hundreds of people, school districts say they are continuing to be vigilant against mosquitoes by spraying on a weekly basis.

"We have a very aggressive and assertive treatment schedule with our facilities. While we can't say we are 100 percent mosquito-free, we do feel that they're safe," said Daniel Escobar, spokesman for the Socorro Independent School District.

Socorro's Eastlake High School's homecoming game had students and fans focused on the game but West Nile virus is still in the back of everyone's minds.

"We want to keep an eye out for our kids, ourselves, and make sure we don't get that West Nile," said Christopher Reyes, a parent at Eastlake High School.

Parents and coaches said they know some students will forget so coaches said they have been buying stacks of bug repellent.

"We try to spray them down on the sidelines. I spray the coaches down, I spray my trainers down, the managers, myself, I don't go anywhere around with spraying, without have the DEET on," said Dennise Brown, a school physical trainer.

"Our coach yesterday, he was telling us he had off with him. So he was telling us here let me spray you down real quick," said one Eastlake student on the stands.

SISD school officials said there isn't much of a concern when they play at the Socorro Activities Complex, where there is artificial turf and no body of water. There is a big concern when playing in the Lower Valley.

SISD said it will continue spraying until mid-October.
