Sale of Triple-A baseball team to El Paso one step closer to approval

By Ric Dupont

EL PASO, Texas —

A group of local businessmen trying to bring Triple-A baseball to El Paso gathered downtown Monday and tried to rally more support.

Josh Hunt is a founding member of Mountain Star Sports group. The group has all but secured the Tucson Padres in a deal that would bring the team to El Paso for its 2014 season.

"Everything we've been doing has been based off a commitment the city made to us back in June," Hunt said.

The deal is now contingent on El Paso's City Council voting on its final decision to spend $50 million demolishing the current City Hall and building a baseball stadium in its place.

Hundreds of people at Cleveland Square spent the evening showing their support for the plan.

"These are people who want affordable family entertainment in downtown El Paso," Hunt said. "They want to increase our quality of life options."

Proponents of the plan have said that the stadium will bring life back to downtown El Paso and pay for itself through long-term revenues.

Opponents have said the City Council should have let the people make this decision since their tax money will pay for it, if it passes.

Salvador Gomez is leading the revolt.

"We need for the people, for the voters to be respected," Gomez said. "The City Council has disrespected all of us."

Gomez said if the stadium is built he will organize a boycott on opening day.

Hunt said the Pacific Coast League has taken another big step in approving the sale of the team. The PCL board will meet and, depending on El Paso's decision, could approve the sale tomorrow.

The PCL released a statement saying that members voted to recommend that the board of directors approve the proposed sale and relocation of the Tucson Club to El Paso.

The fate of City Hall's move, the purchase of the baseball team and building the stadium all depend on tomorrow's City Council vote.
