RUIDOSO, N.M. —

Ruidoso received about 2 inches of snow Wednesday night and temperatures that were cold enough to produce artificial snow.

Justin Rowland is the director of operations at Ski Apache, which is part of the Inn of the Mountain Gods, and he said that in order to make the fake white stuff, it needs to be at least 34 degrees.

Rowland said Wednesday night dropped as low as 24 degrees at one point.

"We want cold weather, and we want snow," Rowland said. "We had our snow making crew on last night. Last night was the first night they were able to make snow."

Rowland said the cold weather means that the resort can start preparing for ski season.

"We've been working on servicing lifts," Rowland said. "We've been doing trail crew work. Now, we'll start making snow, and as we get piles of snow we'll push the snow around."

Rowland said that Ski Apache sees between 165,0000 and 185,000 skiers a year. On busy weekends like during the holidays, the resort sometimes has 6,000 customers.

Rowland said that ski season is expected to start on Thanksgiving Day and could last up until the first week of April.
