New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said he was in Washington Monday to fight for our kids, and perhaps, for the presidency.
The trip to the nation's capital was part of the annual winter meeting of the National Governors Association. Monday morning, Richardson, along with other state leaders, met with President George W. Bush.
Among the topics discussed: cuts to education and health insurance for the poor. Richardson also signed an environmental pact with the governors of California, Arizona, Oregon and Washington to lower greenhouse gas emissions in a five-state region. Despite the big to-do list, Richardson also made time to test the waters for his presidential run. Last month, he announced he formed a presidential exploratory committee. A KFOX news reporter caught up with Richardson and grilled him about the race and his competition.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson:
This is a good time for one governor running for president to talk to other governors. About getting help in the campaign. Good, good, we're going to get some support from governors but I think it's a little early. This race is like a year away. And everyone's panicking. So I'm going to take my time. I'm getting my campaign ready. And then, we'll see.
Well, I'm moving up. I'm doing well. My fundraising's going well. Political support, I've been in Florida. I'm traveling around the country. I feel confident. I'm going to win. But right now, it's very early stages and I've only been running a month. And I've gotten great support in El Paso. I'm coming back in March for another fundraiser. So the support is happening all around the country. Well there are a lot of good candidates out there. My objective is to move to the top tier and I'm only fairly close in doing that. I don't worry about anybody. I'm going to win. I'm just doing my thing.
