EL PASO, Texas —
An El Paso couple who enjoy a road trip from time to time, got lost and were away from their loved ones for three days.
Ricardo and Martha Irma Beltran were found and in good condition Tuesday morning. After a good night's rest in their cozy bed, they talked to KFOX14 about their experience.
The Beltrans, both 75-years-old, went missing on Saturday. Local authorities alerted the media and the community about their disappearance on Sunday.
The Beltrans explained to KFOX14 that they had gone out for a drive. The drive, they said, was only supposed to be for a couple of hours -- but a couple of hours turned out to be three days stuck out in the desert.
Ricardo, driving the couple's 2005 white Hyundai Tucson, encountered a dip. He said he tried reversing his SUV, but the soft sand wouldn't allow him to do so, so he drove forward.
That's when he said he realized they were stuck in a steep 10- to 20-foot pit.
With no cellphone reception, Ricardo and Martha became worried and concerned that nobody would find them.
The couple, married for years, worked together and used what they had to survive the situation.
A tarp, the car's heater and some bottles of water is what they said they used to survive.
"We didn't have blankets. So we used a tarp and turn the heater on every two hours to keep warm," said Martha.
Monday, Border Patrol agents located the couple.
Martha said when she saw lights and agents she became very emotional. "I was just thanking God. I couldn't believe it. They found us there [in the desert]."
The Beltrans were found in Sierra Blanca.
This trip, supposed to be routine, taught the couple a few things. One important thing, they said, is they will let their family know exactly where they are going, even if it's a short drive away.
