Residents Wonder About Long Waits At Trash Collection Site

By Monica Balderrama

EL PASO, Texas —

Some eastside residents are raising concerns about the long wait times at a trash collection site.

Last Saturday morning, residents complained about the long line that was moving slowly outside the the new trash collection site on Pendale Road.

"I came in early this morning and already about 25 vehicles," said Leo Munoz.

Munoz said he didn't want to wait so he left and came back a few hours later. Instead he encountered an even longer line.

"I came early this morning like, I said, three hours later I came back and the line is slow," said Munoz.

"Maybe they need to be a little more prepared since they know that a lot of people don't have time to come during the week," said Max Lopez.

KFOX took these concerns to Ellen Smyth, the city's environmental services director, who said this has been an unusual time for these collections sites because of the February freeze. She said it's a self service and it's taking residents longer to unload their trash because they're getting rid of yard waste.

"That type of waste takes longer to unload because you have to be more careful that you don't stick yourself. We have so much green waste coming in from the freeze like bushes and prickly pear cactus," said Smyth.

Smyth said this weekend they had 288 customers at the collection site, and two weekends before that, 400. She said she understands El Paso is growing and these trash collection sites are becoming more popular.

"If we show that the average times goes way up we're going to have to do something else," said Smyth.

Smyth also added that the number of customers at the collection sites always increases in the spring and summer.
