VINTON, Texas —
The village of Vinton hosted a town hall meeting Wednesday night to discuss key issues with State Rep. Dee Margo.
The lack of water and sewer in Vinton has taken most of the spotlight the last few months, but Wednesday no topic was off limits.
Neighbors discussed how the state can address their concerns on a variety of topics, including the state's budget, health care and education.
"We need to improve our school systems and we can't do it the way we've been doing it. We need parents to get involved," said Lucinda Cuellar, an educator for more than 40 years.
But water and sewer wasn't far from the minds of many.
"We need to continue fighting for all this. For the water and the sewer and our budget," said Vinton Resident Dolores Diaz.
Even those who don't live in Vinton, Like Cuellar, attended the meeting to show support for their neighbors.
"How can anyone not have a heart when there is a need for water and sewer in this area," said Cuellar.
Residents said it was good to talk about the issues facing their community and hope their voices will be heard at the state level.
"We need people that will remember Vinton there in the state Capitol," said Diaz. "We sent letters asking for help and I think some of them heard us. Representative Margo is always here."
Margo is up for re-election in November. He has been very active at the state level trying to bring water and sewer to Vinton. He said he recently spoke to Attorney General Greg Abbot about the village council problems. There is no precedent and the state is still trying to decide the best course of action.
"If the attorney general tells me a call needs to be made to Gov. Rick Perry, I'll be the first one to make that call," Margo pledged to the crowd, which erupted with a round of applause.
