Residents Say Northeast Street Dangerously Dark

EL PASO, Texas —

Like many streets in El Paso, Ibex Avenue has no streets lights. Some residents fear someone can get hurt because it's dark.

It's a small neighborhood in Northeast El Paso. You can see kids ride their bikes and shoot hoops now, but at night it's a different story.

"It looks scary because over here on this side it's dark. All over here is dark too. You can't see nobody," said Melissa Torres, who lives on Ibex Avenue.

Torres said the lack of street lights on Ibex Avenue is a concern.

"Our neighbors have little kids and they play outside. I'm afraid they will get hit by a car," said Torres.

Torres' cousin Adrian Cruz said he only walks his dog in the afternoon and makes sure he's home before sundown.

"When I walk the dog, I only go to the street because that's where the light stops," said Cruz.

KFOX talked to city officials, who said if residents want the city to install lights on Ibex, the neighbors need to sign a petition so everyone agrees. City officials said funds were re-programmed for street lights. Torres said she can think of one benefit of not having lights on their street.

"We can always see the stars and over here you can see the mountains," said Torres.
