Residents on Tejas Drive Clean Up Flood Aftermath

By Samantha Manning

EL PASO, Texas —

Residents on Tejas Drive in south central El Paso are working to clean up the aftermath of flooding from Tuesday night's rainfall.

"This was all paved concrete here believe it or not," David Mitchell said as he pointed to his driveway, which is now covered in mud several inches deep.

It all happened when a gush of rain water tore down a rock wall and caused several dirt mounds to collapse and fall into the property of nearby homeowners. The water and dirt that poured down slammed into their sheds, buried garbage cans, and even uprooted trees.

"It seemed like a river running through the yard," Rebecca Mendez said. "Every time it rains it gets like this."

Mendez has lived in this area since the 1960s and says flooding like this has happened before. But she said that workers would bring new mud to fill out the mounds instead of using the dirt that already sat on her property.

"I asked them why are they putting mud when all that mud is right here? And they said oh we promise this wall will hold back and it will not happen to you again," Mendez said.

But it has happened again and now residents like Mendez and Mitchell are trying to figure out who is responsible. It all depends on whether the land between the dirt mounds and the remnants of the rock wall belong to a private property owner or the city. KFOX14 is waiting on confirmation for an answer to that question.
