Rescued blind puppy's injuries worse than originally thought

By Bernadette Flores

Jackpot, the 10 month-old blind Australian shepherd puppy, that was found inside of Central El Paso dumpster is on the mend.

" He's eating well seems to be in good spirits normal puppy doesn't realize all the trauma he's been through," said Loretta Hyde with the Animal Rescue League of El Paso.

Saturday night we were there when Jackpot was getting prepped for a surgery to have his hip fixed. "The force of this injury is no accident this was done on purpose," said Hyde.

Once the surgery is over and he's had time to recover, they'll work to find him the best home." Even with his handicap, he's going to be a well-balanced family member," said Hyde.

But sadly, then they'll have to move onto the next animal abuse case." You wanna do more, but there's only so much time and money that you can give to make a difference," said Hyde.

It's something Hyde has seen plenty of in her 16 years working with animals.

"It's sad that even your neighbor may not be the best home but people are still afraid to report them," she says.

Right now, they get about 10 animal cruelty calls a day which they turn over to the Sheriff's Office or Animal Control who has a licensed cruelty investigator.

Hyde says the best advice she has for anyone thinking about getting a pet is do your research.

After the surgery on Saturday, the vet determined that Jackpot's other hip was also broken. So for now, they'll wait for this surgery to heal and schedule another opertation in about a month.
