EL PASO, Texas —

If you’re out there braving the chilly temperatures, the El Paso Fire Department offers some tips to make sure you’re safe during severe weather.

Before driving, check the tire pressure and brakes on your vehicle.

Make sure you have the right antifreeze for the temperatures.

And clear your windows, roof and hood of snow before you start your trip.

If you stay indoors, the El Paso Fire Department has some fireplace and heater tips to keep you safe and warm.

They recommend placing space heaters away from bedding and drapes.

Never leave a space heater on when you go to sleep.

If you are using a fireplace, fire leaders said never close the damper if the ashes are still warm.

And finally, do not use charcoal in a fireplace because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
