Recent Fires In Socorro May Be Related, Says City Spokesman

Socorro PD: Arsonist On The Loose

By Kandolite Flores

EL PASO, Texas —

A vacant mobile home in Socorro was destroyed after it was fully engulfed in flames. Fire officials told KFOX14 they believe arson is to blame.

David Garcia, spokesman for the city of Socorro, told KFOX14 three recent fires, including Thursday's, may be related.

“We now have evidence that indicates a serial arsonist is on our streets. And our investigators want to talk with those who know who it is and what’s going on," said Lt. Joe Alvarez, Socorro Police Department.

The mobile home at 1083 Rio Vista Road caught fire at about 4:30 a.m.

Fire investigators told KFOX14 the home was being remodeled after it had been damaged in a previous flood.

A family of three was not home at the time the fire broke out, said El Paso Fire Department fire marshal Rudy Portillo.

Portillo told KFOX14 the fire looked suspicious. "There is no way this fire got stated on its own. Something is not adding up," he said.

The Macedo family does not have insurance, said Portillo. The insurance money they had received to repair damages from the flood was used for the remodeling repairs.

The estimated damage from the mobile home fire is valued at $45,000.

Socorro police said hours before the mobile home fire broke out, a fire suddenly ignited in a desert area behind the McDonald's on Horizon.

On June 17, a fire was set at 10900 North Loop, police said.

They said that fire looked suspicious as well. Evidence was found that make police believe these fires are related.

El Paso fire investigators conducted an investigation at the mobile home fire and was turned over to the Socorro Police Department.
