Reality Show Features Arrests Of NMSU College Students

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

There's a popular reality show called "Campus PD" that airs on the video game channel G4. Many episodes are filmed in Las Cruces and show students arrested on suspicion of underage drinking and urinating in public.

New Mexico State University freshman Joseph Lugo said he likes the show.

"I think it's a fun show to watch, watch people make fools of themselves," said Lugo.

But not everyone is laughing. At the school's alcohol resource center, known as WAVE, Nicole Buenaventura believes "Campus PD" misrepresents most students.

"I think it highlights a certain type of experience that college students are having but not something all college students are experiencing," said Buenaventura.

Buenaventura said all viewers see is the negative drinking habits of some students and not the facts.

"According to a survey we did recently, one-third of students don't even drink yearly, or very rarely," said Buenaventura.

However, according to English instructor Adam Crittende, some students actually want to be on the show.

"One of my students said he'll be in the show and he was kind of proud about it," said Crittende.

"They're (students) just kind of stoked that they made it on; they kind of like to brag about it," said Lugo.

According to a Las Cruces Police Department spokesperson, the Police Department welcomed the show after the university police declined. Officials said as of now there are no plans to film anymore in Las Cruces.
