Rain Forms 'Lake' At Golf Course

Residents of the Vista Hills Country Club in East El Paso were in shocked to see what mother nature had left them after Thursday's rain.

"Well, we woke up this morning and it was a lake out here. It's pretty amazing. We've never had water this high," said Richard Nevins.

Nevins's home sits on the golf course, but now he's got lakefront property.

"There's no water here on this hole. This is all grass, and then there were sand traps over there," said Nevins.

The new pond, looked as if it belonged in the golf course. The water started on the edge of the golf course and extended about 50 feet. The brown muddy water was more than waist deep Friday morning, and it was slowly receding.

"You know I like it (the lake), but I wouldn't want to keep it that way. However, it's a fun change," said Nevins.

Those who've lived in the neighborhood longer said Friday's flood was nothing compared to what it used to be like 15 years ago. Before a drainage system was installed residents had to put sand bags in their back yards to prevent flooding when it rained. Still, last night's downpour proved to be too much for the drains.

Flooding wasn't the only problem. Lightning knocked down a tree in the area.

"Thank goodness it didn't fall the other way. If it had fallen the other way, it would've destroyed the top of that car," said Ben Sterling.

Residents here are happy the damage was minimal, but they fear more rain can lead to bigger problems, such as mosquitos due to the stagnant water.

Vista Hills Country Club said this was an unusual situation. Several lakes formed causing the country club to close nine holes, and cancel the ACTS tournament scheduled this weekend.

The country club will until the water evaporates to begin opening holes again. They anticipate it'll be two or three days before they can do so.
