EL PASO, Texas —
Thousands turn out for this year's Susan G. Komen race for the cure.
But while organizers say they are grateful, this year's numbers saw a steep drop.
That means less money going back into the local community.
"Today's event is all about survivors. It is all about celebrating. Celebrating their battles and also celebrating those that we've lost," said Stephanie Flora, executive director for Susan G. Komen's El Paso affiliate.
Year after year, turnout in El Paso had seen a steady growth.
"Unfortunately, this year, we have had a decline. About 20 percent down. Which means that that's less money that's going back into this community and helping those that need the help the most," said Flora.
About 11,000 participants made their way out last year which churned $280,000 to local organizations that provide breast cancer services. Organizers say only about 9,000 registered this year.
"It's certainly affected lives of friends of ours, family of ours," said Dan Longoria, owner of Mattress Firm.
Mattress Firm has partnered with the organization for the last six years. The business owner says bringing awareness is the biggest issue.
"Seventy-five percent of those funds we raise today stay in this community and they are dedicated to fighting breast cancer here for the men and women who can't afford services," said Flora.
Elsa Morales was cooking dinner for her family five years ago, when she noticed a lump in her breast.
"Immediately, I went to the doctor and after two weeks, they diagnosed breast cancer," said Morales.
She's currently in remission -- and walking for an organization she is infinitely grateful for.
"They helped me a lot when I didn't have insurance, they helped me a lot with all my medical bills," said Morales.
