Quintana's Attorney Accused Of Denying Access To Media

EL PASO, Texas —

Luckily for KFOX, Rachel Quintana's attorney, Theresa Caballero, who, coincidentally, is running for district attorney, granted us an interview Tuesday.   But Newspaper Tree reporter Sito Negron, said he was denied access to the press conference, since Caballero is not a fan of his publication.

"She said, 'No, I don't trust you, and I'm not going to talk to you, and I'm going to ask you to leave,'" Negron said.

Our own reporter at the press conference noticed Caballero also turned away the El Paso Times, although they later came back and were granted an interview.

UTEP journalism professor Zita Arocha believes it is counterproductive not to let all media participate, regardless of how they may have covered a story in the past.

"The minute you decide to run for public office, you need to be as transparent as possible.  You need to lay your facts out, and you need to be accountable," Arocha said.

We caught up with Caballero, to find out why she denied access to certain reporters, and whether she would continue to deny access if elected.

"I am not a public official, and one of my campaign platforms is that I will run my office very differently from my opponent, and all media will have access to me as a public official," Caballero said.

She later said, "I have long had a standing policy regarding reporters who do not tell the truth, and if they do not tell the truth, they are not invited into my office."
