Puppy is tossed out of moving car, rescued by Las Cruces vet center owner

By Samantha Manning

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A puppy was tossed out of a moving car and then run over by that car, according to Las Cruces Animal Emergency Clinic owner John Calzada, who said he rescued the 7-month-old injured dog.

Calzada said he was driving on Highway 28 near Berino when all of a sudden he saw a white SUV open its passenger side door and toss something out. It turned out to be Jade, a pit bull mix, that was thrown into the street.

"She started to chase the vehicle and she turned under the tire and they ran over her," Calzada said.

Calzada said he ran over to help the puppy, who was now bleeding all over her leg.

"Her leg was pretty torn up. She was bleeding really bad," Calzada said.

Calzada said once she was taken to the clinic, they ran some tests and found out she had parvo. Calzada suspects that might be why she is so skinny and could've been why the owners got rid of her.

Calzada said the clinic spent $3,000 of its own money to help nurse Jade back to health.

Now, she's parvo-free and her leg is recovering well. The only thing left is to find her a permanent home.

"It's horrible to think that you know someone could own an animal that doesn't have the means to take care of them, but luckily in her case, we're hoping to get her a good home and start her a new life," Calzada said. "We're hoping to get her a good home and start her a new life."

Calzada said the clinic will spay Jade for free but she will need to get all of her vaccinations.

If  you would like to adopt Jade, you can call the Las Cruces Animal Emegency Clinic at 575-527-8100.
