EL PASO, Texas —

Irvin High School dance teacher Marco Alferez is accused of having child pornography and making pornographic videos with children.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Richeson said many of the people who will take advantage of children are those you entrust with the care of your children.

"We find them as Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders; we find them as school teachers, administrators. We find them in any place where you're going to have a large number of children that they can access," said Richeson.

She said they are not always the people you expect.

"These are people who are often very warm people, friendly people, outgoing people," Richeson told KFOX. "Some of the most heinous crimes in this country that we've become aware of are done by what we describe as sort of the guy next store, the nice guy next store."

So how do parents protect their children? Richeson said it comes down to a good relationship.

"Keep the most open communication with your children, so that if there is anything going on with those children, those children do know, regardless of any threat that's been made, that they should talk to mom; they should talk to dad," she said.

Richeson said parents should also be on the lookout for behavioral changes in their children. Someone who was an "A" student that is now failing or a child that suddenly becomes inattentive or cries easily. That's when it might be time to have a conversation.

If you think your child has been affected by the child pornography case involving Alferez, you're urged to call the victim assistance hot line at 915-231-3364.
