Project Amistad Running Out Of Money

By Renee Narvaiz

EL PASO, Texas —

Leaders with Project Amistad said its federal funding is running out.

The nonprofit group picks up elderly in El Paso County and takes them to have lunch and socialize.

Monday, Project Amistad leaders went to the El Paso County Commissioners asking for $54,000 to keep the program running.

They said their federal funding runs out in October.

Vince Huerta, with Project Amistad, said, “A lot of these individuals are well over 80. It’s difficult for them to get to a bus stop to wait in the hot sun, in the cold.”

Huerta said the money would actually help them expand the program to over 100 people.
