EL PASO, Texas —
Oscar Gonzalez is a political science professor at the University of Phoenix and Park University. There's only one way he said you can describe the announcement.
"I declare to you today as a candidate for President of the United States," said Rick Perry in South Carolina Saturday.
"Very interesting," said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said the Republican Party is already torn. He said the party has the front-runner, Mitt Romney. Then there's Tim Pawlenty and Michelle Bachman.
"They were already fighting for second place," said Gonzalez.
Before Perry's announcement polls were already showing him in that slot. Gonzalez said their best chance now is fighting it out to be the running mate. Gonzalez said the chances of Perry’s name being front in center of the ticket are good.
"Mitt Romney has “obamnicare,” he's pro-choice, he's a Mormon," said Gonzalez.
Perry is pro-life and Christian. All things Gonzalez said are more appealing to Republicans. For Perry this just may come down to fundraising.
"In all the times for governor he's raised over $100 million,” said Gonzalez. "Any election, especially presidential election comes down to money."
That is only one half of the battle for the white house.
"Getting your party’s nomination is one thing," said Gonzalez.
He would then have to take on President Barack Obama, who broke fundraising records and will likely surpass that in 2012. It's not just the dollar signs Perry would have to overcome, Gonzalez said there's the history lesson.
"It's going to be very difficult for Rick Perry to convince the country that another Texas governor can be president," he said.
Gonzalez said Perry will also have to contend with his own demons.
"’Texas should secede from the nation.’ Can someone be president of the United States when he wants to separate the United States of America?" said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez also had some bold predictions on some last minute changes to the tickets.
“On the Democrat side you're going to see Hilary Clinton, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton join the ticket. Sometime as early late this year 2011 or during spring of 2012, Vice-President Joe Biden will step down as vice-president and President Obama will appoint Hilary Clinton and she'll step down. I pretty much guess that George Mitchell will become interim secretary of state at that time. On the republican side, if Mitt Romney becomes the presidential nominee, the party will be unsatisfied to the point they will push for a tea party presidential candidate and that will most likely be Sarah Palin," said Gonzalez.
If Perry does win the presidency, a special election would be held in 2012 to fill his void as Texas governor.
