Prison Guard Accused Of Smuggling Inmates Drugs Pleads Guilty

EL PASO, Texas —

A La Tuna correctional officer could soon be behind bars himself for smuggling drugs to inmates.

Court documents show Randy Smith, 28, accepted a plea agreement, pleading guilty to one of two counts.

Earlier this month, Smith pleaded guilty to unlawfully providing contraband to inmates in prison. He had been facing an additional count of possession of heroin with intent to distribute.

According to Smith's criminal complaint, an inmate reported that Smith was smuggling drugs, including heroin and tobacco, to the Aryan Brotherhood gang at La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution.

After receiving the tip, undercover agents set up a fake deal. In June, Smith accepted $5,000 from an undercover agent to smuggle one ounce of heroin to a La Tuna inmate, the complaint said. Smith was then arrested.

Following his arrest, the complaint said Smith admitted to smuggling contraband about 50 times since 2009.

A sentencing hearing for Smith has been scheduled for December.
