President Barack Obama speaks to Fort Bliss troops

By Ric Dupont

FORT BLISS, Texas —

President Barack Obama spoke to Fort Bliss troops Friday. Amongst other things, he told them all soldiers will be out of Afghanistan by the year 2014.

About 5,000 soldiers and their families filled a hanger on post. The president arrived at the hanger around 1 p.m., and started off by wishing the victims of Hurricane Isaac well.

Soldiers told KFOX they wanted to know about the possibility of major budget cuts and the well-being of soldiers coming home from war.

The president gave a speech that lasted a little more than 30 minutes.

"Two years ago, I was here to mark a historic moment in the lives of our nation and our military," Obama said. "It was the end of major combat operations in Iraq."

Even though a big theme was bringing soldiers home, a group of soldiers who will be deployed to Afghanistan at the end of this year sat directly behind the president.

"Most of our troops have come home," Obama said. "As more Afghans step up, even more of our troops will come home."

He assured everyone that the wars in the Middle East are not the only battle he's fighting. He just signed an executive order ensuring better mental health access to soldiers.

"America's responsibilities to you have only just begun," Obama said.

Thursday Commanding General Dana Pittard told KFOX that Obama came to Fort Bliss partially to find out what the post is doing so well to prevent soldier suicides.

"We need to give (soldiers) the best support and care when you come home," Obama said. "We just had a round table with some soldiers, talking about how coming home can be its own struggle, especially for our wounded warriors. So we've poured tremendous resources in to this effort."

Obama talked about directing funding toward more counselors and people help hotline workers.

Obama also talked about a promising exit plan for soldiers who are leaving the military. He said that plan would help them get into school and use the training they already have toward credits.
