Potential Storms On The Way, Pose More Fire Danger

By Phil Anaya

EL PASO, Texas —

Dry and windy conditions are nothing unusual for the borderland during the spring, but just days away from June with conditions the same, some meteoroligists are now scratching their heads.

"This windy season has been prolonged, its lasting longer than normal," said John Fausett of the National Weather Service.

Fausett said normal would typically mean winds ending around March and April with some sort of precipitation this month.

"May is our number one hail month but we've seen nothing like that this year," said Fausett.

Fausett said the reason the winds are prolonged and rain is delayed is because we're in a long La Nina pattern, but he said its almost over and relief could be on its way as early as next week.

"We could actually see rain," said Fausett.

However there is one problem if a storm comes next week.

"One big concern with the thunderstorms that could occur Tuesday would be dry lightning, if there's not enough rainfall to put out fires that lightning starts, there could be quite and active fire period there," said Fausett.

While wildfires and blowing dust may last a little longer, Fausett said it could be worse because the winds here mean so much more once they travel further east, into the Midwest.

"With this next wind event, dust here usually means damage there, we get the dust they get the severe weather and tornado," said Fausett.
