CHAPARRAL, N.M. —

A woman facing charges after a crash led to the injury of her 6-month-old daughter was indicted Thursday.

Police said Melissa Miranda, 27, had consumed alcohol and may have taken medication prior to getting in the car. Around 2 a.m. Jan. 9, Miranda hit a light pole near the intersection of South Valley Drive and University Avenue in a 1998 Toyota Corolla.

Miranda's daughter was in an adult passenger's lap and unrestrained, police said.

A nearby Dona Ana County sheriff's deputy was parked nearby and heard the crash. Miranda and the 27-year-old passenger did not suffer serious injuries, police said.

The 6-month-old was turned over to her father, police said.

Miranda was charged with negligent child abuse, driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs, no driver's license, no insurance and open container.

There were also five outstanding warrants for Miranda's arrest. She was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bail set at $10,000.
