LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Two men are facing child abuse and drunken driving charges in separate incidents that occurred Sunday night, police said.

The first incident occurred when Frankie Baca, 29, was driving west on Missouri Avenue after 9 p.m. An officer noticed Baca made a wide left turn onto Espina Street and initiated a traffic stop.

Baca, who was traveling with an adult woman and her 3-year-old daughter, failed standardized field sobriety tests, and the investigation revealed that he was drinking alcohol at a friend's house while watching the Super Bowl.

Baca was charged with one count each of child abuse and drunken driving.

Later that evening, police responded to the corner of Davis Avenue and Fourth Street where they discovered that Andres Sanchez, 32, was driving away from a Super Bowl party with his fiancée and three children.

Police said Sanchez became angry and started driving erratically. He was also speeding and purposely drove against the flow of traffic, police said.

Police said that when Sanchez stopped, he started choking his fiancée. A 12-year-old girl jumped out of the car and ran to a nearby residence where she asked the resident to call 911.

Sanchez was charged with three counts of intentional child abuse, one count of battery against a household member and drunken driving.

No major injuries were reported in either incident.
