LAS CRUCES, N.M. —
A women hired to look after a Las Cruces couple's infant son is charged with child abuse after investigators said they learned of a recording that showed her shoving a used baby wipe inside the toddler's mouth.
Elvira Talavera Perez, 43, also known as Elvira Torres was hired in July 2011 to care for the 10-month-old child. In December, the couple started to notice gold chains and earrings missing from the home, police said. They then decided to set up a hidden camera in their bedroom where the jewelry was stored.
When the father reviewed Tuesday's video, he observed Perez throwing baby wipes on his son's face and shoving one of them inside the toddler's mouth, investigators said. The video also showed Perez dropping a dirty diaper on the toddler's face, police said. The video showed Perez taking jewelry from the couple's bedroom as well, they said.
Perez was arrested Wednesday and is charged with three counts of negligent child abuse. She is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.
