LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed outside of his home Thursday morning when he crashed into a friend's vehicle while speeding, police said.

The accident happened around 12:50 a.m. in front of Wayne Andrew Jaramillo's home at the intersection of Solano Drive and Kansas Avenue.

Witnesses told police that Jaramillo and his friends were traveling eastbound on Lohman Avenue after they left a local restaurant. Witnesses saw Jaramillo performing stunts on his 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle while on Lohman.

When he arrived at the intersection, police said Jaramillo sped through a stop sign and crashed into the 2003 Chevrolet Colorado pickup driven by his friend Corey Gillespie, 25, who was on his way to Jaramillo's home, police said.

Jaramillo and his motorcycle traveled more than 100 feet and struck a fence and tree. He was wearing a helmet at the time, police said.

He was taken to the Mountain View Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Traffic investigators said Jaramillo may have spotted a marked police unit on Lohman Avenue, and sped up for an unknown reason while he was on his way home.

Officers lost sight on the motorcycle, and while they were attempting to locate it, they arrived at the scene of the crash, police said.

Gillepsie was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended or revoked license. He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bail set at $750.

Police believe alcohol may also have been a factor in the crash.
