EL PASO, Texas —

After responding to a domestic disturbance call, a police officer was punched by a man who was attempting to flee, police said.

Around 2 a.m. Friday, officers learned that a 20-year-old female was assaulted by Charles Rodriguez, 24, with whom she had a relationship, police said. The incident happened in the 11700 block of Royal Banner Lane in East El Paso.

Rodriguez was spotted by another officer while he was driving a 2002 tan and grey Nissan Sentra. While the officer tried stop Rodriguez's vehicle, Rodriguez sped up and tried to flee, police said.

Rodriguez then stopped suddenly and got out of his car and challenged the officers, police said.

After a brief foot pursuit, Rodriguez punched an officer in the shoulder area, and another officer hit Rodriguez with a Taser, police said.

Rodriguez was charged with assault on a public servant, assault family violence with previous conviction, evading arrest or detention in a motor vehicle and three outstanding traffic warrants.

He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with bail totaling $10,706.03.
