Police: Man Pointed Gun And We Shot Him

Family: He Never Had A Gun

By Ric Dupont

EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police shot and wounded 41-year-old Hector Piedra on Saturday morning after, they said, he allegedly rammed his SUV into a patrol car, and then got and pointed a gun at them.

Piedra’s wife, Mariana Piedra, said her husband didn’t have a gun that night or any other. She said Hector Piedra was angry, but didn’t become violent towards her. She said her daughter, Dayana Piedra, panicked when she saw her father upset and called the police.

"I don't know why they would say he had a gun,” said Mariana. “He didn't have a gun. I've never seen a gun."

The Police Department said it’s sticking with the facts of the case it reported on Saturday. It said Hector Piedra pointed a handgun at them before they opened fire. The department said it wouldn’t have reported those facts if were any question about them.

"He had never been like that,” Dayana Piedra said. “I don't know why he was mad. He was just mad." She said she’s concerned for her father and hasn’t been able to visit him in the hospital.

Police said Hector Piedra is in stable condition, and once he’s released, he’ll face several felony charges.
