SUNLAND PARK, N.M. —

Around 8 a.m. a mobile home on 101 Maple Ct. caught fire, and police said a man in his late 60s died at the scene.

The man was identified as Manuel Alvarado.

Police intially said the fire may have started after Alvarado used his stove to keep himself warm.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reported that the fire started in Alvarado's bedroom, Sgt. Javier Diaz of the Sunland Park Police Department said. Officials determined that a "combustible material," likely clothing, was stored too close to a space heater. Diaz said the fire was ruled an accident.

El Paso, Santa Teresa, Sunland Park and La Union fire department officials were on the scene.
