EL PASO, Texas —

Davalous Brown is facing charges after he allegedly tried to take a police officer's gun and tried to get away, police said.

Around 11:20 a.m. Thursday, police stopped Brown, 19, who they said was driving a black Chevrolet Malibu without his seatbelt.

Police said they could smell marijuana coming from Brown's vehicle, and he gave an officer a bag of marijuana that was hidden in his vehicle's glove compartment.

The man allegedly tried to grab the officer's holstered gun when the officer felt a tug on his holster, police said.

Police said the officer drew the pistol and demanded Brown to turn off his car. Brown refused, and drove away, police said.

A police sergeant spotted Brown's vehicle in the 9000 block of Herbert Street in northeast El Paso, and Brown fled running toward Hondo Pass, police said.

Brown was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on charges of attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer, evading arrest, evading arrest in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana and a municipal traffic warrant.

Brown's bail totaled $25,137.
