Police Increase Patrols For Holiday Weekend

EL PASO, Texas —

Law enforcement will be out in force this Memorial Day weekend. Officers will be looking for safety violations and drunken drivers.

Starting Friday at 10 p.m., any DWI suspect who refuses to take a breathalyzer test can expect El Paso police to draw their blood to check their alcohol level.

A police spokesman says the goal is safety.

“Officers will secure a search warrant from a judge and draw their blood for analysis,” said Darrel Petry, El Paso police spokesman. “The ultimate goal is to keep our roads safe. If we could make it through with no serious traffic collisions and no traffic fatalities, that would be an incredible Memorial Day weekend.”

The blood draw operation will end at 4 a.m. Saturday.

Law enforcement agencies in New Mexico also plan to set up sobriety checkpoints to look for intoxicated drivers this weekend.
