Police Identify Man Found Near Railroad Tracks

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Police have identified the man whose body was found July 24 near the railroad tracks in central Las Cruces.

A resident discovered the body of Juan Lopez, 44, whose last know address was off Watson Lane in Mesilla Park, lying on the ground near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway tracks at around 8:40 a.m. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation led detectives to believe that Lopez was near the tracks when he was struck by a train late Wednesday evening. Lopez’s body was sent to the medical investigator’s office to determine the exact cause of his death.

Detectives do not have reason to believe Lopez’s death was a result of foul play, said officials.

Northbound and southbound traffic on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway were stopped for several hours while police conducted their investigation.
